Thoresby Hall, Ollerton

The Grounds at Thoresby Hall, Ollerton

The Grounds at Thoresby Hall, Ollerton

Thoresby Hall is as lush and ornate an example of a Victoriana as you can imagine. Magnificently restored by Warner Leisure Hotels in 1998, its turrets, balustrades, gabled tower and finely-wrought iron gates are perfect reminders of the exuberance of 19th century architecture.

Yet a mansion has occupied this site since 1589, when the 1st Earl of Kingston commissioned William Talman to house his family at The Dukeries: one of the earliest great enclosures of Sherwood Forest.

Holme Lacy Hotel – Herefordshire

View from the Outside

Holme Lacy Hotel

A heady sense of the histories of Church, Monarchy and Parliament pervade Holme Lacy House, a magnificent Grade I listed mansion just 20 minutes from the handsome riverside town of Ross-on-Wye.

Until 1909 Holme Lacy was the family seat of the Earls of Chesterfield. It is believed it stands on the site of an abbey dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St Thomas à Becket.

Mentioned in the Domesday Book and owned by a courtier of William the Conqueror, an earlier house lent a bed to King Charles I and the present mansion was co-opted for cabinet meetings by prime minister Pitt the Elder.

The broader cultural heritage of this beautiful part of Herefordshire is within easy reach. Within 45 minutes you can be enjoying the glorious gardens of Leominster’s Hampton Court, while Holme Lacy is perfectly situated for the Hay Literature Festival and the world famous Cheltenham races.

Free Wi-Fi internet access is available in selected public areas around the hotel.

Beautiful Lounge at Nidd Hall

Beautiful Lounge at Nidd Hall

Records show that there was a house on the site of Nidd Hall at least 100 years before Elizabethan times and its oldest rooms, the cellars, date from this period. Yet Nidd Hall is perhaps best remembered for its 20th century history and the rumoured first fateful meeting between Edward VIII and Mrs Wallis Simpson.

Nidd’s Georgian serenity is fit for the most regal of encounters and it’s easy to imagine the lovers-to-be exploring this elegant Grade II listed stately home and its landscaped gardens.

Nidd Hall sits within 45 acres of Victorian and Edwardian parkland, sculpted lawns and stepped terraces, the perfect manicured foil to the nearby glories of the Yorkshire Dales.

Within 20 minutes you’ll be entranced by the medieval masterpiece of Fountains Abbey, while York, Bolton Abbey and Harewood House are all easy to find.

Lakeside, Hayling Island

Built in 1937 at Hayling Island, Hampshire, Lakeside Coastal Resort was originally called ‘Coronation’ after the accession that year of King George VI. Yet Lakeside’s atmosphere is as warm, friendly and down-to-earth as you’ll find.

Neat, well-appointed chalets are laid out with every thought for your ease and convenience. The village feeling extends to a central courtyard, with its reception, bars, cafés, entertainment complex and deceptively huge, championship-standard indoor bowls rink.

For 2009 at Lakeside we have focused on our environment. We’ve worked on beautifying the lake itself and adding other new touches around the site and also invested in refurbishing our magnificent indoor 6 rink bowls hall.

Beyond the village, the views across the nearby yachting marina are simply idyllic and the sea is a pleasant 20-minute stroll away.
