The Grounds at Thoresby Hall, Ollerton

Thoresby Hall is as lush and ornate an example of a Victoriana as you can imagine. Magnificently restored by Warner Leisure Hotels in 1998, its turrets, balustrades, gabled tower and finely-wrought iron gates are perfect reminders of the exuberance of 19th century architecture.

Yet a mansion has occupied this site since 1589, when the 1st Earl of Kingston commissioned William Talman to house his family at The Dukeries: one of the earliest great enclosures of Sherwood Forest.

Holme Lacy Hotel

A heady sense of the histories of Church, Monarchy and Parliament pervade Holme Lacy House, a magnificent Grade I listed mansion just 20 minutes from the handsome riverside town of Ross-on-Wye.

Until 1909 Holme Lacy was the family seat of the Earls of Chesterfield. It is believed it stands on the site of an abbey dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St Thomas à Becket.

Mentioned in the Domesday Book and owned by a courtier of William the Conqueror, an earlier house lent a bed to King Charles I and the present mansion was co-opted for cabinet meetings by prime minister Pitt the Elder.

Beautiful Lounge at Nidd Hall

Records show that there was a house on the site of Nidd Hall at least 100 years before Elizabethan times and its oldest rooms, the cellars, date from this period. Yet Nidd Hall is perhaps best remembered for its 20th century history and the rumoured first fateful meeting between Edward VIII and Mrs Wallis Simpson.
